Five Animal Frolic QiGong was regarded as the earliest form of Medical QiGong in Chinese
history and was designed by Hua Tuo, a leading physician of the Eastern Han Dynasty. The Five
Animal Frolic is a selection of classical healing QiGong exercises that are renown for cleansing,
restoring, and fortifying the energy, Qi (pronounced Chee) of the five major body organs- Heart,
Kidney, Liver, Lung, and Spleen. Together, the individual exercises of stretching, bending, and
wiggling harmonize the Qi of the body and mind to bring improved balance and health to a
person. These playful exercises imitate the nature, movement, and characteristics of five,
cultural, honored animals- Tiger, Deer, Bear, Bird, and Monkey. Each animal imitation exercise
correlates to an organ, emotion, element, and color. During these exercises, Qi is cultivated,
cleansed, and moved through the body by movement, breath and sound specifically designated
to each of the five exercises. Our imitations of these animals are a classic QiGong practice to
open our connectedness to the Universal Energy and Five Elements- Fire, Water, Earth, Metal,
Wood. Healing, strengthening, and harmonizing of an individual’s body, mind, and spirit benefit
in a multitude of levels from repeated practice of the movements. This lively group of classic
animal imitation exercises inspires each participant’s innate spirit, nature, “childlike innocence”
spirituality, and energy.
